In recent years, energy management technology has evolved to allow the deployment of "intelligent thermostats." When tied to a room motion sensor, thermostats detect whether or not the room is occupied and maintain either an "occupied" temperature, which the guest has set, or an "unoccupied" temperature, which is set by property management. A reduction in energy consumption is immediate--and can be significant. While this type of fixed setback system is effective, it leaves one question to be answered:

An optimal energy management strategy required deployment of a system that will control the temperature within the room as well as the amount of time it takes the HVAC unit to recover an occupant's setpoint temperature upon re-entry. Marriott Site Plans For 38% Cut In Guestroom Energy Use

Marriott's Ann Arbor Hotel at Eagle Crest, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, has begun the installation of Telkonet’s EcoSmart Suite. Prior to this energy efficiency upgrade, the property completely renovated guestrooms and other areas of the facilities and is now embarking on a comprehensive upgrade to significantly improve the energy efficiency of the property.

Telkonet's networked EcoSmart platform, which is designed to minimize the facility’s energy consumption while maximizing guest comfort, will be installed in 232 luxury rooms and suites, complementing many other green initiatives already implemented at the property.

Telkonet will provide a turnkey installation of the EcoWave product package wirelessly networked to Telkonet's cloud-based EcoCentral management platform via a Zigbee infrastructure, which is expected to reduce in-room energy consumption and equipment run-time by 38%. The EcoSmart network is designed to automatically adjust the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems when rooms are unoccupied via Telkonet's patented Recovery Time technology and enhance guest comfort through integration with the existing property management system.
